Once a staple of a good education, Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter has, in recent years, been dismissed as outdated, prudish, and irrelevant for our times.

In this course, we will see why this American masterpiece is not only relevant to, but prophetically prescriptive for our cultural moment, and every cultural moment because it is reflective of the human condition.

In a word, The Scarlet Letter is timeless.

We will be using the Penguin Classics edition of the text:

Each week builds on the next so we recommend coming regularly.

Registration is required for this course.

There will be some outside work for this course.
